HELLO

My name is Ruth Wright and I recently got my first job in medical communications. Previously I completed my MSc in Genomic Medicine and before that a BSc in Biomedical Science. I hope to use this blog to further develop my writing for further job prospects but to also share my love of genetics with people that may not realize how amazing this field is. So, to any of you who stumble across this page, welcome and I hope you learn something fascinating.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

September 2016 - June 2019
St. Georges University of London

BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE BSC

Research Project: GMPPB variant identified in 3 consanguineous Iranian families with Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy through whole-exome sequencing – Exome filtering was performed with Microsoft Excel to extract potentially causative mutations in 3 patients. Pathogenicity of variants was discerned through applications of international guidelines for interpretation of sequence variants in conjunction with a novel application of signal-to-nose analysis.

Final Year modules:

  • Human Genetics

  • Application of genomics in rare disease and cancer

  • Personalised medicine

Skills: Microsoft toolset in the analysis of thousands of records, presentation skills (creation of appealing sides and their presentation), and evaluation of scientific reports.

August 2019 - August 2020

King's College London & St. Georges University of London â€‹

GENOMIC MEDICINE MSC

Research Project: Exploration of Nonsense-Induced Transcriptional Compensation (NITC) Mechanism in Human RNA Sequencing Data – This project was completed entirely online due to COVID-19 social distancing measures.  This project utilised command line and R language for large data analysis.

Modules:

  • Omics techniques and technologies

  • Advanced Bioinformatics and data quality assurance in genomic analysis

  • Genomics of common/rare inherited disease

  • Cancer Genomics

  • Infectious disease

Skills: R programming language and Unix command-line interface for large data analysis, higher level evaluation of scientific reports, report writing to appropriate and varied audiences.

Background Details

SCIENTIFIC CONTENT DEVELOPER

As part of the largest diagnostic network the UK I work alongside my colleagues to perform large scale analysis of COVID-19 swabs from across the whole of the UK using state-of-the-art equipment and other technology.

COVID EPCR LABORATORY MANAGER

I worked as part of a team to establish the first endpoint PCR diagnostic lab. I lead a team of 10 and consistently exceeded sample number targets all while maintaining the highest level of quality. I aided SOP and workflow improvements to optimize the overall quality and efficiency of ePCR and other laboratory sections at UK Biocentre. I handled mechanical and technical issues including a variety of data input errors, and equipment malfunctions, and report more severe errors to relevant departments. I also carried out extensive troubleshooting, including running regent validations, and experiments and performing dis-concordance analysis requested by either scientific support or LGC.

COVID LABORATORY OPERATOR

As part of the largest diagnostic network in the UK, I worked alongside colleagues to perform large-scale analysis of COVID-19 swabs from across the whole of the UK using state-of-the-art equipment

INTERN - VICTORIA HEALTHCARE INTERNATIONAL CLINICS

Victoria Healthcare consists of several Ho Chi Minh based clinics, of which I had the pleasure to visit and to learn about the different clinic structures that they employ based on cliental and client architecture.
